Brody Wilgenburg married Janelle Jackson in May of 2007. Brody grew up on a dairy in Hanford and attended Central Valley Christian High School. He then continued on to Cal Poly San Luis and graduated with a degree in Engineering. He and Janelle have three children, Jace, Bailey, and Brooklyn. I asked Brody a few questions about his start in farming stone fruit and this is what he said:
Q: When did you start working at Kingsburg Orchards/start farming?
A: In January of 2007 I started working for Brent, my father in-law, and I started farming on my own in 2010.
Q: Over the years, what processes or technologies do you think have been most helpful? Why?
A: Automated equipment in the shed such as auto sizer’s, etc. They reduce labor needs and make the plant more efficient. In the field, trellis systems have allowed us to have more uniform trees to fill the space more efficiently as well.
Q: What piece of fruit do you look forward to each year?
A:I look forward to white nectarines such as the Honey Pearl because they have a good balanced flavor. I also look forward to the Royal Edie variety of cherries.
Q: When you are not working at “the Apple,” what are you doing?
A: Playing with the family, growing giant pumpkins, playing soccer, hunting, fishing, playing in the river, etc.
Q: If you weren’t working here where else might you work?
A: I would be working at a structural engineering firm such as Provost & Pritchard Engineering Inc.
Q: What is one of the most challenging things in farming?
A: Dealing with the weather; rain, hail, heat, etc. It can be stressful at times.
Q:You have had various jobs within the company; what is your favorite and why?
A: Planting new trees and building trellis systems. Also, testing new varieties.
Q: How is your current position different than your last?
A: When I started I was doing everything myself like shoveling weeds, irrigating, spraying, etc. Now I manage others and pay bills.
Q: What advice would you offer to someone starting in your position?
A: Grow nuts! They are so much easier to farm.

P: Cuando no está trabajando en “Kingsburg Apple” ¿qué estás haciendo?
R: Pasando tiempo con la familia, con un crecimiento calabazas gigantes, jugar al fútbol, cazando, la pesca, jugando en el río, etc
P: Si usted no trabajaba aquí donde más podría trabajar?
R: Yo estaría trabajando en una empresa de ingeniería estructural, como Provost & Pritchard Engineering Inc.
P: ¿Cuál es una de las cosas más difíciles en la agricultura?

P: ¿Qué consejo le darías a alguien que empieza en su posición?
R: Cosechen nueces! Son mucho más fáciles de cultivar.
